The hoopoe is in the Netherlands! And not 100 kilometers away from my house, no, it’s almost literally in my backyard. I’m not a birder who hops in the car to then drive for hours to catch a glimpse of something special, but when it’s so close, I’ll definitely hop on my bike quickly to see it – and who wouldn’t?

In the past few days, it has been spotted multiple times by birdwatchers, but it wasn’t until Sunday when it was reported on waarneming.nl that it became known to the general public. It has been several days now, and it’s still roaming around the grass field, where the hoopoe is very visible. It’s not at all shy and isn’t distracted by the crowds of photographers and bird enthusiasts.

After taking plenty of photos, I’m leaving it alone for now, but I certainly don’t rule out biking by later this week to see if the hoopoe is still there.
