For many years now, several long-eared owls have been roosting in this tree every autumn and winter. During the winter months, long-eared owls prefer to roost close together, often in built-up areas. This is partly because it is slightly warmer there, but also because food is usually more readily available.

With my new lens, I can now get just a little closer. Each time, it is a pleasant surprise to count how many long-eared owls are actually sitting in the tree. If you don’t know they are there, you would walk straight past them — they are that well camouflaged.
