We don’t often see winter landscapes like this in the Netherlands. When the world turns white, it’s even more exciting to go looking for what is arguably the most colorful bird in the country: the kingfisher. Having lived here for six years, I know a few spots where the chances of spotting one are high. At this particular location, a relatively tame bird often sits quite close by. I approach slowly, taking plenty of photos along the way—after all, any shot could be the last one before it flies away.

You never really get tired of seeing a kingfisher! Especially not now, when the contrast between the white world and the colorful bird is at its peak.
